How to Estimate Shipping Volume and CBM

Calculate carton CBM, volumetric weight, and when air or sea freight is the practical starting point.

CBM formula for cartons in centimeters

Multiply length × width × height (in cm), then divide by 1,000,000 for cubic meters per unit. Multiply by quantity for total shipment CBM. Use our shipment calculator for chargeable air weight and container fit estimates.

Air volumetric vs actual weight

Airlines charge on the higher of actual weight or volumetric weight: (L × W × H × qty) ÷ 6000. Light, bulky cargo often becomes volumetric — which is why CBM planning matters even for air freight.

Sea freight and container benchmarks

Sea equivalent weight is often estimated as CBM × 1000 kg. Approximate container capacities: 20ft ~28 CBM, 40ft ~58 CBM, 40HQ ~68 CBM. Above ~18 CBM, compare FCL against LCL consolidation for your lane.
