Third Party Inspection in China

Third-party inspection means quality control performed by an independent company paid by the buyer — not by the factory. The inspector reports defects, quantity issues, and compliance gaps without pressure to approve shipment so the supplier can collect balance payment.

**Pre-production (PPI)** — Materials, colors, molds, and components confirmed before bulk run.

**During production (DPI)** — Inline checks at 20–50% completion for workmanship consistency on large or multi-SKU orders.

**Testing coordination** — Lab tests for material, safety, or destination-market requirements when product category demands certificates beyond visual QC.

Evaluate providers on four factors:

1. **Geographic coverage** — Can they reach your factory city within your production window without excessive travel markup?

2. **Independence** — Is the inspector paid by you and reporting to you, with no commission from the factory?

3. **Report quality** — Photo-documented defects, clear pass/fail language, quantity reconciliation — not vague "checked OK" summaries.

4. **Integration with sourcing** — Can the same team verify the supplier, monitor production, inspect, and align export documents?

Factory QC exists to ship the order. Independent TPI exists to protect your payment and market reputation. Factories may grade leniently, hide subcontracted production, or mix SKUs inside cartons — issues a buyer-side inspector is paid to find.

Retailers, Amazon sellers, and industrial distributors increasingly require third-party reports in supplier agreements. Building TPI into PO terms before production starts sets expectations and reduces last-minute disputes at the loading bay.

Fees depend on factory location, number of SKUs and sample points, inspection type (PPI vs PSI vs full-day DPI), and re-inspection after rework. A single-SKU PSI near our Jiangsu base costs less than a multi-SKU DPI requiring overnight travel inland.
